Have My Poppy Seeds Sprouted?

Someone asked, not knowing how to recognise a poppy’s first leaves. I found a few in the garden — not many yet, as it has been a dry May.

The first set of leaves is long and thin. (Click to enlarge.)

The second set starts out round, and so does the third. These early leaves may be light green, dull green, a little bluish or reddish.

This little plant is so much further advanced than the sprout just below it; could it have sprouted in the fall and waited through the winter?
